There's More Than Data To Consider With Database Hosting

If your website includes customer lists or a forum, you definitely need a database and a hosting service that can handle your large amounts of dynamically stored information. More than likely, your hosting service will offer MySQL, the most popular database for online pursuits. It's not the only one you can consider, though.

Before getting locked into a service you cannot live with later, your decisions have to be considered from all sides before you spend your money and risk your credibility. If your website cannot handle the action from your customer base, even if it's a hosting server problem and not specifically yours, your customers will be unhappy.

Let's check out three of the three databases you might consider.

MySQL is, by far, the most popular Open Source database in the world. It's free to download, as an Open Source product. The database partner for MySQL is PHP, also a free Open Source product. PHP is a scripting language that allows you to insert instructions into your web pages for your server to execute. These two, online applications are easy to use, and working side by side, are very valuable applications that can make your online life easier.

ACCESS is a Microsoft Office application found on most desktops. It is a very good database with a limitation you have to consider. ACCESS was designed to run on your desktop and it does a great job of doing just that. You can keep your customer lists or other data items in an ACCESS database on you desktop and it will work seamlessly. Online, however it is out of its element and you have corrupted data. It is not good practice to push an application beyond it intended use.

The last one to consider here is Microsoft SQL Server. Microsoft's offering in this arena is a fully-developed database solution actually pointed at large enterprise databases. Some of the popular functions of MySQL are missing in this application. Some of SQL Server's strongest offerings are yet to be added to MySQL.

Before you do anything, fully investigate both products and make the decision to use the one that best meets your needs.
